Severna Park Boys Lacrosse Holds Off Broadneck, 12-9, Captures County Title

The Severna Park boys lacrosse team has many strengths for its opponents to deal with. When it comes to playing their rivals at Broadneck, Mikie Harmeyer and Jimmy Maher have been especially strong this season.

Harmeyer and Maher guided to the Falcons a 12-9 victory on Monday afternoon, helping Severna Park claim back-to-back Anne Arundel County boys lacrosse championships.

“I thought the boys came out and really competed,” said Harmeyer, who led all scorers with five goals.

Parker Griffey struck first for Broadneck with a goal, assisted by Keegan Houser, less than two minutes into the game.

The Falcons responded with consecutive goals from Harmeyer, Connor Panebianco and Kyle Griffith. Maher assisted the latter two, on his way to a game-high six assists.

“Jimmy is just a great lacrosse player,” said Severna Park coach Dave Earl. “His field vision and IQ is second to none.”

Penalties by Severna Park led to Broadneck leveling the game at 3-3, as Casey Domanski scored his first of three goals on the day.

But the Bruins attack would sputter for most of the second quarter. There Harmeyer added two more of five goals and the Falcons went to halftime leading 7-4. Joey Kilpatrick scored once for Severna Park.

“We’ve got to shoot a little better,” said Broadneck coach Clay White. “I liked our shots, but the placement wasn’t good. Their goalie stepped up.”

Severna Park goalie Casey Fox saved seven shots for the Falcons. His counterpart, Ben McGrady, recorded nine saves for Broadneck. Robert McDonald briefly stepped in for McGrady and added one save also.

The third quarter saw the two sides trade a pair of goals; Bubba Bowen scored one of his two goals in the quarter. Then Maher and Harmeyer connected again for a goal.

“Me and Jimmy were just able to connect and click early on,” Harmeyer said.

Harmeyer and Maher also were instrumental in Severna Park’s 16-7 win over Broadneck on April 12.

“We knew Broadneck was going to come out firing,” Harmeyer said.

Broadneck clawed back to within one, at 10-9, with 5:43 to play in the fourth quarter. Bruins attacker Brendan Kennedy, who had two assists, tallied back-to-back goals to give his team a late momentum swing.

“We thought we were right there at the end of the game,” White said. “When we were within a goal, I go, ‘Here we go. We’re going to go into overtime and win the thing right there.’”

As quickly as momentum can begin, it can be taken away too. Severna Park then responded with two goals in less one minute of play.

“We didn’t do a good job of taking away their strengths,” White said.

Harmeyer and Maher each scored to take the lead to 12-9, with 3:51 left to play. Neither team would score from there and the Falcons clinched the championship by three.

“We knew this county championship was going to be a tough one and a close one. Which it was,” Harmeyer said.

Severna Park and Broadneck will now head into the East region of the MPSSAA playoffs with each team receiving a first-round bye. The Falcons will then face the winner of North County and Glen Burnie, while the Bruins will take on Annapolis on May 10.
