Letter To The Editor: Traffic Jams

Posted

Let's see more on the terrible traffic jams Zach Sparks covered in your June 1 issue. Here are some possible topics:

  1. Whatever happened to the ill-fated Arundel Expressway of a few years ago that was scrapped in favor of I-97, which has created its own jams between Parole and Route 2? It seems like commuters are taking the narrow backroads that approximate the plans for the expressway (for example, B&A Boulevard from Severna Park to Arnold, College Parkway from the college to Bay Dale, the road behind the Severna Park Giant). Adding lanes where backups are occurring would help.
  2. Why not change the intersection of College Parkway and Ritchie into an overpass with ramps? This would eliminate the need to stop northbound and southbound traffic on Ritchie as well as exit and entry on College Parkway. Yes, expensive, but a major source of backups.
  3. Here's a low-cost item. Most of the paving is already there; just needs some signs. At northbound Ritchie where it joins Route 10, there’s already an exit lane. Just change the "slow" lane into an optional straight or exit lane. Same as on the Beltway end. This would eliminate people who cut into the current exit lane at the last moment.
  4. Consider extending the light rail from Glen Burnie to Annapolis on the existing right of way.
  5. Bay Bridge No. 3. I was opposed to No. 2 and was proven wrong. Now it's obvious we need a third bridge down south to take care of the D.C. traffic, hopefully with all the side benefits No. 2 brought.
