The Bucks completed their season in championship fashion with a 45-30 victory over the Suns to win the Green Hornets boys 12/13 club basketball final at Severn School on February 24.

The Bucks, who are Gavin Iley, Oliver DiAngelo, Kyle Reincke, Matthew Marcantoni, Ryland Hester, Nikita Vilcu, Daniel Carey, Evan Souder, Nicholas Patrick and Brendan Watson and are coached by Glen Iley and Jim Watson, went 15-4 overall on the season.

The 3-pointer played a major role in the Bucks’ championship win as the team hit 10 long-distance bombs in the victory. Souder connected on three 3’s, While Carey and Iley each hit two and DiAngelo, Marcantoni and Watson all hit one. Iley and Watson both had 11 points in the win.

The Suns team of Andrew Tull, Zachary Canady, Michael Bowles, Luke Hayes, James Heffernan, Dylan Hansen, Casey Grindle, Nathan Brand and Ryan Minto put up a good fight before ultimately succumbing. Brand had a game-high 13 points, while Bowles hit two 3’s and finished with eight points and Grindle scored six. The Suns were coached by Aaron Grindle.

Bucks coach Glen Iley cited a loss to the Heat as a galvanizing force for the eventual champs.

“The boys came up short [against the Heat], but it made them come together, and they ran the table from that point on,” said Iley. “The boys always had a positive attitude and played as a team. Ball movement and defense was the key to their success.”
