Benfield Elementary Kids Heart Challenge Raises Record Amount

Posted

Benfield Elementary students raised a personal record-breaking $17,825 for the American Heart Association through the Kids Heart Challenge. The top 10 students who fundraised the most money got to spin a wheel, which landed on the teacher they got to slime at an all-school assembly on Friday, March 22.

This year, fourth-grader Colby Evans was the top fundraiser in the school with $848. As a reward, Colby got to slime Benfield Principal Deborah Short. This fundraiser is special for Colby, whose dad was diagnosed with heart disease in 2015.

“This event helps bring awareness that heart disease can happen to anybody at any time,” said Heidi Evans, Colby's mom, who attended the assembly. “This helps make the community more aware of the symptoms.”

Since 2001, Benfield Elementary has raised roughly $149,259 for the American Heart Association, according to youth marketing director Denise Harbaugh, who attended the assembly.
