BAYS Girls Defeat Green Hornets For Jr. A County Championship

The Broadneck girls lacrosse program is set to receive an infusion of proven champions over the next couple of years.

The BAYS Junior A girls defeated rival Severna Park 13-4 in the Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks championship game to win the county championship and finish the season undefeated at 12-0.

The team of Mary Moore, Ella Killian, Julia Sokolowski, Sadie Dean, Lilly Kelley, Chloe Rand, Sam Lavorini, Nora FauntLeRoy, Grace Driggs, Molly Yeomans, Lilah Sage, Reagan Baldwin, Caitlin Powell, Olivia Powell, Lexi Dupcak, Mason Smargissi, Elizabeth Kane, Tate Cassidy, Ally Keith and Jenna Kantowski received a first-round bye and defeated St. John the Evangelist in the semifinals before defeating the Green Hornets in the championship.

Rand was exceptional in goal for Broadneck, while the draw control of Driggs and Dupcak helped BAYS enjoy an advantage in possession. Driggs was named championship game MVP.

Most of the girls on the team were eighth-graders who will move on to high school sports this fall, and many of them have played together since kindergarten. The staff of head coach Donna Sage and assistant coaches Bean Dupcak, John FauntLeRoy and Jenn Baldwin have all coached with BAYS for at least nine years; for Sage, FauntLeRoy and Baldwin, the championship game was their final rec game as coaches, as their daughters are moving on to high school next year.

“The coaches are extremely proud of this team and the way they played together as a unit the entire season,” said coach Sage. “In the championship game, we moved the ball well on attack and transitions, communicated effectively on defense, and goalie Chloe Rand was strong in the cage. Draw control by Grace Driggs and Lexi Dupcak were also key in our victory. The girls brought everything that had worked on in practice all season with them to the field [in the championship]. It was an amazing way for our eighth-graders to end their rec lacrosse careers.”
