14U Green Hornets Complete Stellar Youth Baseball Careers

The Green Hornets 14U travel baseball team had a fine season competing in the Chesapeake Baseball Association and in multiple regional tournaments this spring and summer.

Severna Park’s roster of Tucker McDonough, Jimmy Miller, Michael Bowles, Stephen Mollohan, Maison Beam, Zach Eaton, Michael Wiley, Vinny Tomar, Joshua Edwards, Will Ward, Clay Weaver and Christian Jensen followed up a .500 record in CBA play to make the championship game of the league’s Gold Tournament bracket and finish as the playoff’s runner-up.

The season began with significant roster turnover from last year’s 13U CBA Gold tournament championship team. Only four of the 12 players from last season’s roster returned, and the team featured a mixture of experienced players and boys playing travel for the first time. But the season came steadily into focus as the team played better and better with each passing game.

“We played very competitive with our community team against some top showcase tournament teams in many games,” said head coach Bill Edwards. “The first part of the season was constant learning, growing and developing. The second half was playing as a team and competing day in and day out.”

The Green Hornets came up just shy of the championship in the CBA playoffs, beating two excellent teams to advance through the bracket before ultimately losing the final 6-4 despite having mounted an offensive threat until their final at-bat.

Severna Park followed with a strong performance at the Youth Baseball Nationals in Myrtle Beach in July, going 2-3 in pool play against a handful of powerful teams from around the country.

“The boys competed and made our little area team very proud,” said Edwards. “We had strong performances from so many of the boys, and it was fun to watch.”

McDonough and Wiley were both selected to play in the tournament’s All-Star game.

Edwards saw the season as a successful ending to the Green Hornets’ youth careers and a solid runway for the boys’ forthcoming high school baseball seasons.

“As a coach, it’s been a pleasure watching these young men grow into respectful, hardworking ball players,” Edwards said. “I wish all of our boys good luck in their next venture of playing high school baseball.”
