11U Green Hornets Extend Win Streak, Claim Tourney Title

The Severna Park Green Hornets 11U travel baseball team won five games over the weekend of May 21 and 22 to capture the May Mashers Tournament championship in Wheaton, Maryland.

In their five wins, the Green Hornets outscored the opposition 75-30 and outhit the opposition 61-37. The five wins also added to the Green Hornets winning streak, making it nine wins in a row since May 4.

The Hornets had stellar defense all weekend, including highlight plays from Luke Mench (outfield) and Dylan Phillips (catcher). Phillips caught 20 of the 25 innings played over the hot and humid weekend.

On Saturday, May 21, the Green Hornets got things started by beating Dig In Baseball of Gaithersburg 21-4 and Loudon Aces (Leesburg, Virginia) 17-15. On the mound, Eric Benner pitched the Hornets to victory against Dig In (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K’s, 0 BB) and Reese Davis took the W against a potent Aces lineup (2 2/3 IP, 5 H, 6 R), with Jack Grossi securing the save.

On Sunday, May 22, the Green Hornets won back-to-back-to-back games versus Dig In Baseball, Sandy Spring (Sandy Spring, Maryland) and Virginia Stars (Manassas, Virginia). In their second meeting in two days, the Hornets defeated Dig In 13-1 in the quarterfinals with Brennan Baisden claiming the win on the mound (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 K). In the semifinals, Gavin Gerard (W, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R) and Teddy Uy (save, 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K) toed the rubber for the Hornets in their 11-1 win versus Sandy Spring. In the 13-9 championship-game win versus the Stars, Robbie Ballagh scattered seven hits over four innings pitched and gave up four runs en route to the win.

On offense, the Green Hornets were led by Jack Grossi (.733, 11 hits, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 13 RBI, 7 runs scored), Brennan Baisden (.714, 10 hits, 1 double, 1 triple, 9 RBI, 12 runs scored), Noah Vasey (.615, 8 hits, 1 triple, 5 RBI, 12 runs scored), Cole Cavanaugh (.556, 5 hits, 1 double, 1 triple, 7 runs scored), Reese Davis (.500, 5 hits, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 6 RBI, 7 runs scored), and Noah Awa (.417, 5 hits, 4 RBI, 7 runs scored).

The Hornets win streak, which increased to 11 games after the tournament by beating GORC and Mid-Maryland United, ended on May 25 with a loss to HCYP.

“The boys have worked hard since tryouts last July and they should all be proud of themselves,” said head coach Scott Grossi. “Throughout the fall season, winter workouts, and this spring, they’ve continued to put forth the effort, both mentally and physically, to get better each day. The boys had a lot of fun during this winning streak and they’re excited to start another one. We’re excited to see what they can accomplish over the last month of the season.”
