SPMS Student Fundraising Through Baseball
Severna Park Middle School student Ryan Carter, 13, is doing what a lot of boys his age are doing this summer: playing baseball. For Carter, however, this summers busy baseball schedule is centered on giving back to others, as he and 40 other youth baseball players from around the county and state will be participating in the 2012 Potter Baseball Tour to raise money for the We Believe Foundation, which provides financial assistance to youths and young adults battling cancer. The tour is organized by Jeff Potter, a longtime area youth coach, and will take the players by bus to competitions at minor league fields in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio. The tour begins June 18 at Mid Atlantic Sports in Severna Park and ends on July 15 at Kinder Park.
Carter sees the tour as both baseball and life experience. My mom and dad always tell me, life is not a spectator sport, because what we do affects so many people, says Carter. Its great to travel like a major league team. We play in minor league ball parks and stay at hotels, so its pretty exciting. But we never go far from why its important we do this.
It is a message instilled by Coach Potter, who has organized similar tours in past years, and believes this years tour will raise between $11,000 and $15,00 for We Believe. I work on making these young players realize through cause and effect that everything they do on the field affects the team and what they do in life affects so many, says Potter.
Ryan and his parents, Steven and Kristine Carter, invite the community to support the tour on Tuesday, June 12, at 6:00pm at Ellie's Place, located at 8421 Veterans Highway in Millersville. Donations can be made by calling Kristine Carter at 410-987-1011, ext. 4112 or Coach Jeff Potter at 410-562-4463.
