The Severna Park boys swim team made the most of its final preparations before the county championships, sweeping to victories over Broadneck, South River and Annapolis at Arundel Olympic Swim Center on February 2.

South River’s girls swept to victories over Severna Park, Broadneck and Annapolis, while Severna Park’s girls went 2-1 with wins over Broadneck and Annapolis.

With times tight and the Falcons, Bruins and Seahawks all bringing deep rosters, the county girls and boys titles appear to be open for contention with the championship meet set for February 9.

Severna Park’s boys managed three team wins (51-43 over South River, 65-29 over Broadneck and 67-27 over Annapolis) on the strength of overall depth as opposed to a handful of first-place finishes.

But the day wasn’t without top performers, either: Leading the way for the Falcon boys were event winners Alex Kuriawa and Reid Hussey. Kuriawa won both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard free, and Hussey won the 100-yard butterfly.

Severna Park claimed another event victory in the 200 free relay, in which Kyle Cannon, Jack Maloy, Ryan Maloy and Ian Dennis touched first.

Charles Pitta was second in the 500 free, and Ben Simpkins was third. Matthew Dalton placed second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 free. Jack Maloy was third in the 100 backstroke. Ryan Maloy was third in 100 breaststroke.

Kuriawa, Hussey, Dennis and Dalton placed second in the 400 free relay; and Kuriawa, Hussey, Dalton and Ryan Maloy took second in the 200 medley relay.

The Falcon boys finished the season a perfect 15-0, and several members of the team set school records this season. Kuriawa set records in both the 50 free (21.63 seconds) and 100 free (47.68 seconds). Hussey is now the school’s record holder in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.24. The 200 free relay team of Hussey, Kuriawa, Dennis and Ryan Maloy set a school record of 1:30.52.

The Severna Park girls also had some strong performances in defeating Broadneck and Annapolis on February 2. Allyson Lee was third in both the 50 free and 100 free. Sophia Patz was third in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Elena Harris was third in the 200 free. Nicole DeMaio was second in the 500 free, and Chloe Wright was third. Madison McNutt was second in the 100 back.

Isabell Stone, Patz, Lee and Maddie Maier were second in the 200 free relay. McNutt, Stone, Patz and Lee placed second in the 200 medley relay. Stone, Maier, Harris and Emma Patenaude were second in the 400 free relay.

Broadneck’s boys had a handful of strong finishes in defeating South River 48-46 and Annapolis 55-39. Matt Cembrano was third in both the 200 IM and 100 fly. Jack Arnold was runner-up to Kuriawa in the 50 free.

Daniel Jones, Colin Van Allen, Cembrano and Arnold placed third in the 200 medley relay. Arnold, Gabe Kott, Hunter Fulton and Cole Canon placed second in the 200 free relay.

Broadneck’s girls had an event winner in Brayden Bowen, who won the 100 fly, and she was also a member of the winning 400 free relay team along with Ella Martin, Kim Horn and Tori Fulton. Martin placed second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 back.

Bowen, Martin, Fulton and Maddie Rue were third in the 200 medley relay. The Bruin girls lost out to Severna Park and South River but defeated Annapolis 64-30.
