The Severna Park golf team punctuated its stellar regular season with its sixth A Division first-place finish of the fall on September 27, totaling a team-low score of 156 to defeat Broadneck, South River and Arundel at Fairway Hills Golf Club in Columbia.

Severna Park’s win improved the team to 24-6 overall on the year and earned the team the regular-season county championship. The Falcons marched to a 24-6 mark with six first-place finishes, two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes in 10 matches in the four-team A Division.

“It [has been] an amazing year, so far, to watch these kids grow from day one,” said Falcons head coach Pete Buck. “They have continued to build off of last year’s success and played even better this year.”

The Falcons’ Matt Snowden bested the field with a 2-over score of 37 in the regular-season, county championship-clinching victory at Fairway Hills, and teammate Addison Wells took second overall with a 38. Pete Regala carded a 40 and Matt Verni carded a 41 to contribute to the team score, while teammates Andrew DeLaere (45), Katrina Schultz (46) and Connor Garmey (49) had solid rounds as well.

The 156 total at Fairway Hills was tied for Severna Park’s lowest 36-hole team score on the season, as the Falcons also totaled a 156 at Bay Hills on September 22 when Snowden shot a 38, DeLaere and Verni both shot 39 and Wells shot 40.

There have been a slew of successful rounds for the Falcons this fall, and players have taken turns producing solid nine-hole scores. Verni shot the best round of the day with a 39 at Chartwell Country Club on September 19, leading Severna Park to a 164 and another first place. Wells shot a 1-under 35 on September 14 at Crofton Country Club to lead the field and to lead Severna Park to a 157 and another team victory (Wells also had the day’s best round of 36 on September 21 at Navy, when Severna Park took second as a team to South River). Snowden shot a field-best 37 on September 8 at Bay Hills in another team win for Severna Park, which totaled 161.

Citing the “rock-solid” one-two punch of Snowden and Wells and the various times when Verni, Regala, DeLaere, Schultz, Grace Appel and Campbell Haney contributed to team scores, Buck said the season has exemplified teamwork.

“This year has been a true team effort,” he said. “Different golfers have stepped up at each match. … Their hard work, determination and ability to battle in the face of adversity have allowed us to succeed at high levels.”

With the county championships on October 4 and the District V and state championships later this month, Buck also said the team isn’t finished yet.

“Winning the regular-season county championship was just one piece of the puzzle, and now they’re ready to tackle our end-of-season goals.”
