Severna Park Field Hockey Knocks Out South River To Reclaim 4A East Crown

The Severna Park girls are back in the state tournament.

A year after falling to South River in the 4A East region final and seeing the Seahawks go on to win the state championship, the Falcons claimed this year’s region entry in emphatic fashion on Wednesday, rallying from 1-0 down to take a 4-1 win over South River and the 4A East crown at Kinder Park.

Goals by Alex Miller (assisted by Kate Bray), Emme Sayers (assisted by Lila Slattery), Slattery (assisted by Miller) and Bella Blumenberg (assisted by Bray) ensured the Falcons will be making the program’s record 33rd appearance in the state tournament.

Senior captain and defensive leader Mallary Sellars said the team has balanced playing each game as it comes with hoping for a chance at redemption against the Seahawks.

“This is absolutely unreal,” said Sellars, still flushed with excitement after the final whistle. “This is all we wanted this season, and it makes me really happy that we finally achieved our goal. We’ve been trying to take it game by game, but we’ve done that so we can take it up until when playoffs hit, so it just feels really rewarding. I’m really, really happy.”

The Falcons still have work to do to achieve the ultimate goal of a state title, but they just cleared a major hurdle in emerging from the East, which has typically been the state’s strongest overall region; South River won the state crown last year and in 2012, sandwiched around Severna Park’s three straight 4A state titles from 2013-2015.

The Falcons play at Broadneck on Monday night in the state semifinal against 4A South champion Churchill.

The state final is at Washington College on November 11.

Sellars said the Falcons are pursuing the end goal with focus and desire.

“Definitely we’ve been talking about how much we want it more, on Monday when we played Arundel and today with South River,” said Sellars. “We deserve it. We practice with intensity so that we can play with intensity for playoffs.”
