Severna Park and Broadneck Athletes Represent At States
Falcons Hayes Takes State 1600m Title

Following strong performances at the county championships at Chesapeake High School on May 9, several athletes from the Severna Park and Broadneck track and field teams went on to represent their schools at the 4A East Regional Championships at Chesapeake High School on May 17 and at the MPSSAA 4A State Championships at Morgan State University May 25-27.
The Severna Park girls had the top finish for any county schools girls team, placing 7th in the state out of 36 teams. The Falcons boys team placed 10th, while Broadnecks girls took 23rd and its boys 31st. Many athletes from both schools turned in top-10 performances at Morgan State.
Leading the way at the state meet was Severna Parks Ashley Hayes, who became the 2012 state champion in 1600m with a time of 5:00.42, a full 10 seconds faster than runner-up Lucy Srour of Winston Churchill. Hayes also took 2nd in the 800m, and Maddie Clouser finished 7th in the 800m. Julie Koffler finished 10th in the 3200m. Emma Staisloff took 2nd in pole vault with a vault of 106, and Britni Shawen tied for 5th. The girls 4x800m relay team of Maddie Clouser, Jana Gawitt, Julia Downing, and Jodie Clouser placed 8th.
The top Severna Park boys individual finisher at the State Championships was Danny Stringer. Stringer took 3rd in pole vault with a vault of 1200, and Jeff Patrick cleared 116 to finish 5th. Darrian Johnson took 4th in 110m hurdles with a time of 14.97. Sam Pershall took 5th in the 1600m and 10th in the 800m. Ryan Forsyth took 6th in the 3200m, and Jimmy Shipley took 8th. Garrett Fanshawe continued his excellent season in the hurdle events, taking 8th in the state in 300m hurdles. The boys 4x200m relay team of Fanshawe, Johnson, Brian Taylor, and Jose Reyes took 5th.
The Broadneck girls were led at states by speedster Brianna Moore. Moore took 5th in 100m dash and 7th in the 200m. Ellie Smith placed 9th in the 1600m. The 4x800m relay team of Rachel Armstrong, Else Droof, Smith, and Sophia Cologer took 7th.
On the boys side, Jordan Baluyot and Jordan Hallman performed well in a strong pole vault field, taking 6th and 9th, respectively. Damian Cromwell took 11th in the 100m dash. The 4x800m relay team of Evan Uthus, Chase Graham, Charles Skord, and Laurence Jaross placed 10th.
