Local Gymnast Medals At National Competition
Brooke Johnson, a Severna Park eighth grader and nationally competitive gymnast, had an amazing 2011-2012 season. At the Maryland State Championships on March 25, Johnson took third place all-around in her age division, which allowed her to compete in the Region 7 Championships in April. At that meet, Johnson competed against gymnasts from Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, New Jersey and Washington D.C., and needed a sixth-place finish or better in order to advance to the Level 9 national meet. Johnson finished sixth to earn a spot on the Region 7 Junior Division 2 team.
On May 4, Johnson and the Region 7 Junior Division 2 team traveled to Landover, Md., to compete in the Eastern Championships, the competitive seasons culminating event, which included the best gymnasts in the country at this level. Johnson shined at the Eastern Championships, taking home the silver medal in the all-around competition with a score of 37.1. She also medaled in vault, taking the bronze with a score of 9.4. As part of her stellar all-around meet, Johnson was a top-10 finisher in uneven bars (ninth), beam (sixth) and floor exercise (10th). Her performance at the Eastern Nationals helped the Region 7 Junior Division 2 team take first place overall with a score of 148.725.
