Hoopsmart Girls Win State Title
The Hoopsmart 8th grade girls basketball team is no stranger to success, and on May 12, Hoopsmart added a second consecutive AAU state championship to its already well-stocked trophy case. Despite over half the team being newcomers to the squad, Hoopsmart grew stronger with each tournament this year and rounded into form for the state championships, the first tournament title of the season for the team.
Seven of the 11 players on this team are new from last year, said Head Coach Dan Zajac. They came together not knowing any of my defenses or offense and have made me extremely proud. It would have been easy for them to use it as an excuse, but instead they worked hard at every practice, studied the plans I sent them and put in extra time on their own to get where they wanted to be.
In the tournament final at New Town High School in Owings Mills on May 12, the entire Hoopsmart roster of Carly Bohlen, Katie Callahan, Erin Carroll, Savannah Clough, Kennedi Colclough, Alexandra Driscoll, Tori Gray, Julia Kenealy, Cassie Koverman, Katie LeGrand, and Jordan Zajac showed tremendous grit and determination to overcome a nine-point first-half deficit to roar back and defeat the Lady Lions, 36-35, seizing the state championship.
For them to put their individuality aside and do what's best for the team at this young age speaks volumes about the girls and how they are being raised, said Zajac.
Hoopsmart will continue its summer season with several tournaments before competing at the US Junior Nationals in July.
