Father’s Day was championship Sunday for the 13U Green Hornets select baseball team. Severna Park capped a 4-1 playoff run on June 18 by defeating the Bowie Bulldogs 4-1 at Arnold Park to claim the Chesapeake Baseball Association postseason tournament championship.

With strong pitching and defense, the team of Grant Cowell, Drew Crowley, Ty Cummings, Josh Edwards, Reid Figlioli, Ethan Green, Garrett Hannon, Tucker McDonough, Aidan Turner, Hunter Verreault, Will Ward and Clay Weaver held Bowie to just four hits in the final and allowed only one run in each of its four playoff victories. Severna Park notched victories over the Calvert Cutters and Chesapeake Orioles en route to the championship win over Bowie.

Head coach Tony Figlioli, who leads the team with assistant coaches Carl Johnson, Bill Edwards, Ron Verreault and Brian McDonough, said the team’s depth and resiliency after a slew of injuries forced players out of action were critical to its success.

“As a result of [injuries], we’ve been able to build depth around the field, especially with our pitching staff,” said Figlioli. “I believe that is one of the reasons we were successful in this tournament, as we could go deep with arms when we needed it.”

He added his praises for the effort the boys showed to continually improve and develop as players. “I am so proud of the boys and all the hard work they’ve been putting in to be successful,” said Figlioli. “They deserved this, and to have this happen on Father’s Day was just an added bonus. I can’t thank the assistant coaches enough, as well, for all the time they dedicate to teaching the game and being great role models for the boys.”

The 13U Green Hornets will carry the momentum of their CBA championship into the their final tournament of the season when they compete at the Youth Nationals Baseball tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from June 30 to July 7.
