With a 5-3 win over rival Broadneck, the Green Hornets U15 junior boys lacrosse team coached by Mike Ruppert and Eric Husselbaugh avenged its only loss of the season and captured the Anne Arundel County championship on May 20 at Kinder Park.

After finishing the regular season with a 9-1 record, the Green Hornets entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed and defeated Crofton 9-4 to advance to the final against BAYS.

Facing Broadneck in a rubber match of the season split, the Hornets jumped out in front early with goals from Dan Ramsey and Colin Walsh. James Ruppert dominated faceoffs, and as a result, the attack of Luke Somervell, Josh Giebels and Luke Durling was able to keep possession away from Broadneck.

The midfield was paced by Jay Pierce, Owen Barrett, Luke Payne, Calvin Sobocinski and Cyrus Jones. Severna Park defensemen Britt Bordes and Paul Isenberg shut out Broadneck’s leading scorer, while the defense of Collin Ryan, Hayes Webb, Sean Fitch and Josh Boyle held Broadneck’s offense to just three goals. Steven Oxley played outstanding in the goal, making many crucial saves.

Jack Dearing sealed the victory with a goal in the last minute of the game.

Also contributing throughout the season were Conlan McConnell and Patriot Knickerbocker.

“These young men played with great passion and sportsmanship,” said coach Ruppert. “All their hard work and efforts paid off with a championship season.”
