Elvaton Recreation Association’s Fred Martin recently retired from his numerous positions in the organization after 45 years of volunteer service.

Members of the Shipley’s Choice neighborhood took up a collection to give Martin and his wife, Diane, a gift of $2,400 on December 16 in recognition of his years of service.

Friends said that through his volunteer work, Martin was devoted to fulfilling the four goals of Elvaton Recreation Association’s mission: ensure children have fun, learn sportsmanship, learn teamwork and learn skills in their chosen sport.

“In a youth sports landscape that is dominated with select teams with never-ending seasons, Elvaton [is] an oasis that focused simply on the kids enjoying sports,” said David Putzi, an Elvaton basketball, baseball and lacrosse coach for both his daughters, who worked with Martin for many years. “That spirit of putting the kids first was the inevitable result of having Fred Martin at the helm of the organization. Fred is not just the glue that held Elvaton together — he is Elvaton. My family is eternally grateful to Fred for allowing my girls to learn how to win with grace, lose with dignity, and work within a team structure. These life lessons will reside with my girls far beyond their experiences at Elvaton. What an amazing gift Fred has been to my family and our community.”

John Miller, another longtime Elvaton coach and volunteer, said of Martin, “I have had three kids go through the Elvaton program in multiple sports, and I have coached in the Elvaton program for more than 10 years. You cannot find a more friendly and accommodating person than Fred Martin. He truly cares about all the kids in the Elvaton program and about making sure that both the kids and the parents have a great experience. He is one of the best people I have ever come across.”
