The Broadneck High School girls’ cross country team put together an outstanding race at the Anne Arundel County championships at Annapolis High School on October 25. On the Panthers’ difficult, hilly, zig-zagging course, the Bruins placed all seven of their runners in the top 14 to earn a team score of 35, besting runner-up South River by 30 points and obliterating the competition to claim this year’s title of county champions.

The Severna Park boys’ team continued its season of dominance. All seven Falcon runners placed in the top ten, giving the team a score of 24 and allowing Severna Park to cruise past second-place South River (69 points) and win the title. It is Severna Park’s fifth boys’ county title in six years.

Annapolis swept the individual titles, as Sarah Sykora took the girls crown and Hale Bullen set a course record in taking the boys’ honor.

The Severna Park girls took third place in the team standings, as did the Broadneck boys.

Broadneck’s girls’ squad was paced by Ellie Smith, who came in less than one second behind Sykora to finish as runner-up. Rachel Armstrong (sixth), Ashleigh Sullivan (eighth), Kathryn Wesdyk (ninth), Erin Dougherty (10th), Sophia Cologer (13th) and Taylor Morgan (14th) rounded out the Bruins’ stellar race day.

Severna Park’s Ryan Forsyth and Jimmy Shipley battled for second place behind Bullen, with Forsyth edging his teammate by a little over a second to finish as runner up. With Forsyth (second), Shipley (third), Ben Cambon (fifth), Sam Pershall (sixth), Rhys Burgett (eighth), JP Hussey (ninth) and Dillon Cooley (10th) all placing in the top ten, the Falcons had no legitimate challenger as they locked up the title.

Julie Koffler was Severna Park’s top finisher on the girls’ side, taking fifth. Eliza Mott (11th), Maddy Keller (15th), Hannah Schoener (17th) and Erica Brown (19th) helped the Falcons to a third-place team finish.

Broadneck’s Laurence Jaross (12th), William Parker (13th), Hayden Binnix (14th), Evan Uthus (15th) and Duncan Vick (25th) paced the Bruins’ boys’ team in its third-place team finish.
