Girls Indoor Track: Severna Park Motors To County Title, Broadneck Takes Third |

The Anne Arundel County indoor track and field championships were held at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Hyattsville on January 31, and the Severna Park girls totaled up a score of 97.5 to top runner-up Meade and 3rd-place Broadneck and win the county championship. The Severna Park boys placed 4th and the Broadneck boys 8th in what was a solid all-around meet for our area’s track-and-field student-athletes.
Ashley Hayes was the leading individual scorer on the day for the Falcons, taking 1st in the 800m and 1600m and 2nd in the 500m for a total of 28 points. Michelle Nelson took 1st in the 3200m, and event in which she has excelled all year; Julie Koffler was right behind for 2nd, and Hannah Schoener placed 4th. Nelson also took 2nd in the 1600m, finishing right behind Hayes. Ryan Bathras had a fine meet for the Falcons, taking 6th in the 500m and 2nd in the 800m. Kerrigan Stern was a point-getter in the 800m, placing 7th. Sarah Childress picked up six points for the Falcons with a 3rd-place finish in 55m hurdles. Childress, Andrea Holtermann, Kelsey Kirk, and Morgan Torggler collected points with a 6th place finish in the 4x200m relay. Bathras, Holtermann, Kirk and Molly Mcintire placed the same in the 4x400m, good for three points. Koffler, Schoener, Stern, and Melissa Henry likewise banked three points for the Falcons for their 6th-place finish in the 4x800m relay.
Gina Danessa picked up 5.5 points for the Falcons by placing 3rd in pole vault, and Tara Seifert collected a point by placing 8th in triple jump. Bethany Studnicky was the top Falcon finisher in shot put, placing 10th.
The Broadneck girls had a very strong meet in garnering a third-place finish. Brianna Moore took 2nd in 55m dash and 300m dash to net 16 points for the Bruins. Emily Barton and Aislinn Probst finished 4-5 in the 500m; In the 800m, Barton took 4th and Probst took 8th. Nora Barnes-Horowitz took 4th in the 1600m, and Sophia Cologer took 5th. Else Drooff was a top-10 finisher in the 1600m, taking 9th. Katherine Wesdyk took 3rd in the 3200m, while Ashleigh Sullivan took 6th and Barnes-Horowitz took 8th. Kayla Cook placed 4th in 55m hurdles. The 4x200m relay team of Moore, Elizabeth Marquess, Ali Miller, and Taylor Ruden took 4th; Barton, Marquess, Cook, and Ruden took 3rd in the 4x400; and Barton, Cook, Probst, and Ellie Smith were the county champion 4x800m relay team. Lucie Kirby scored points for Broadneck, banking three for her 6th-place finish in pole vault.
County notable: Old Mill’s Alexis Franklin turned in an outstanding all-around meet, breaking the county record in three of her four 1st-place finishes on the day. Franklin set new county records in the 300m, 500m, and 55m hurdles and also took 1st in the 55m dash.
