It’s the New Year, and there’s no better time to make a resolution to enjoy more of what the local arts and entertainment scene has to offer. To help you out, we’re re-launching our entertainment blog, keeping an eye on all there is to see and enjoy in your hometown.

Children’s Theatre of Annapolis opens their “older kids” show this weekend, starring local youth between the ages of 12 and 18. Families can expect to enjoy an excellent performance of “Grease,” the beloved musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, about teenagers in the 1950s. The production is directed by Christy Stouffer, music directed by Josh Konick, and choreographed by Jason Kimmel. Leading a cast of nearly forty youth will be stars Erin Paxton as Sandy, John LaRussa as Danny, Mariel White as Rizzo, and Mark Hollberback as Kenickie. The show runs 7:30 on Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays through next weekend.

Also opening this weekend will be the latest production in Colonial Players of Annapolis’ season. “Cinderella Waltz,” a comedic re-telling of the classic fairy tale (with some philosophical and sociological ramifications, as well as plenty of laughs) by Don Nigro, looks to be a not-to-be-missed evening of entertainment. The production is directed by Jennifer Parris, starring Liza Warder as Rosey Snow, Pat Reynolds as Prince Alf, Tim Sayles as Delbert Snow, Kathryn Huston at Mrs. Snow, Olga Petrovic as Goneril, Sam Alagna as Regan, Monica Garcia as Mother Magee, Thomas H. Beheler as Troll, and Dann Alagna as Zed. Shows begin at 8:00pm Thursday through Saturday, and 2:00pm on Sunday. It should be noted that Cinderella Waltz contains adult themes and language and is not suitable for children.

Meanwhile, its closing weekend for two shows at Toby’s Dinner Theatre. “White Christmas,” playing at the Columbia theatre, and “Annie,” playing at the Baltimore theatre, will enjoy their final performances on Sunday. Toby’s will open “The King and I” at Columbia and “Smokey Joe’s Café” at Baltimore next weekend.

Those looking to catch a drink or a bite to eat while enjoying live music have plenty of options around town. Brian Boru of Severna Park will feature Justin Ryan tonight and Meg and Angie on Saturday, both performances beginning around 9:00pm. Also in Severna Park, Café Mezzanotte will be hosting Wildman Band tonight, beginning between 8:00 and 8:30pm. In Pasadena, Bamboo Bernie’s will feature Thunderball tonight and No Pets for Noah on Saturday, while Cancun Cantina will host Friday Nite Line Dance lessons tonight.
