Like it has for sports fans worldwide, the Jeremy Lin story gives me goosebumps. I was working late covering local sports Friday night, dvr’d the Knicks game, and watched it from 11-1 a.m., not knowing Lin had already set Madison Square Garden and New York City on fire by exploding for 38 points and 10 assists in a 92-85 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
I soon realized I was watching a legend in the making. Lin has completely transformed the energy of the New York Knicks. Four games ago, the Knicks were 8-15 and in the midst of a disappointing season. Now, they are the talk of the town, as Jeremy Lin has poured in 114 points (28.5 per game), 32 assists, 15 rebounds and seven steals in four victories.
The coolest part of Jeremy Lin’s unbelievable week is the way the stars have aligned for him. A Harvard graduate, he was cut by two NBA teams earlier this season, was playing in the D-League in Erie, PA, did not have a guaranteed contract until Tuesday of this week, and basically went unnoticed this season as a possible Really Good NBA Point Guard.

The Knicks brought him onto the roster, and he has flourished in Mike D’Antoni’s pick-and-roll offense, all while sleeping on the couch of teammate Landry Fields because he had not yet gotten his own housing in New York City. He has drawn worldwide attention, and has humbly and repeatedly thanked his teammates, coaches, and Christian faith in interviews. He seems like a true point guard and an ultimate team player, and someone who is excelling beyond anyone’s expectations in a system that is built for his skill set.
One of Lin’s best quotes from last night’s post-game press conference: “I am not really too worried about proving anything to anybody,” said Lin. “As a team, we are growing and I think everyone is buying into it and that is why we are becoming more dangerous."
Dangerous, unexpected, incredible, and seriously fun to watch. It’s all happening RIGHT NOW for Jeremy Lin.
