On August 11, the St. Andrew’s Swim and Tennis Club will host the Kenzie Rose Youth Triathlon, an event that raises money for pediatric brain cancer research at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C.

Kenzie Rose passed away from brain cancer on December 18, 2016, at 17 months old. Brendan Wills, Rose’s uncle, started the event to keep her memory alive. Wills is a triathlete and works alongside Allison LaRochelle, another triathlete and friend, to coordinate the event, attract sponsorships and grow the triathlon’s popularity.

“I’m not here to make it the biggest triathlon in the state; we are trying to keep my niece’s memory alive,” Wills said. “I’m doing the logistics of the race, and Allison has been instrumental with contacts with St. Andrew’s, Kinder Farm and big business sponsorships.”

According to Wills, the event has raised more than $10,000 for Children’s National.

Last year, the triathlon was held at the Crofton Country Club. However, safety concerns caused Wills to consider other locations. The popularity of the triathlon grew significantly from the previous year as well.

“With Kinder Farm [Park] being right across the street from St. Andrew’s, and with the pool being so close, I thought it was the perfect venue with a safe environment,” said Wills. “We’ve teamed up with a lot of great sponsors, and it’s going to rival some of the adult triathlons in the area.”

Wills’ contact at St. Andrew’s was Pamela Garland, the social chair on the pool executive board. Garland and Wills met through mutual friends. The pool has participated in charity events in the past, raising money for another community member, Ella Edwards, and her fight against Ewing sarcoma last year. At the January-February board meeting, Garland mentioned the idea of hosting the triathlon to the executive board.

“I brought it up to the pool board and said, ‘We’re a community. When Ella was sick, we did bake sales for her,’” said Garland. “We are all about reaching out and being a part of the community and helping, and it was unanimously voted, wanted to be part of this event because there’s no reason not to.”

St. Andrew’s also helped to spread awareness about the triathlon to the community by participating in the annual Fourth of July Parade with a float that honored hometown heroes.

“People want to help, but they don’t know about these things that people are struggling with and going through,” said Garland. “Ella rollerbladed the entire parade and handed out flyers to bring awareness to the Kenzie Rose Youth triathlon.”

The event requires that the club allow the use of its pool and locker rooms. The pool will be used from 7:00am-9:00am, and the triathlon brings along its own lifeguards. However, one St. Andrew’s staff member will be there for assistance.

“Just seeing what one child can do to inspire others, it is truly beautiful,” said Garland. “Everyone is collaborating to help someone in need.”
