Severna Park High School senior Alyssa Panzer stumbled on her latent entrepreneurial talent at a time when she was just trying to save some money by making her own gift baskets of bath bombs.

“I saw people giving them away as gifts, but they were really pricey,” recalled Panzer, whose company, AMP Cosmetics, aims to make its own brand of bath bombs as an “alternative to expensive, store-bought ones.”

Before making bath bombs, Panzer made bags, jewelry and lip scrubs. “I love making things,” admitted Panzer. “I’ve always been really creative as a kid.”

In middle school, she earned more than $100 by selling her items at a craft festival. “That event definitely came into mind when I was considering whether I should create a bath bombs business,” Panzer recalled.

Panzer started making her own bath bombs in 2015. “At first, I was just giving them as gifts,” said Panzer. “But then friends asked me for more, so I started selling them.”

Panzer’s big break came in September 2015 when Severna Park High School’s Integrated Community Stakeholder’s Team recognized Panzer for her entrepreneurial spirit. “The award inspired me to turn this into a business venture,” Panzer said. “I originally wasn’t expecting this to become a business, but it turned into one.”

A teacher at Severna Park High worked closely with Panzer and helped her promote the products, giving her valuable marketing pointers on making effective business cards and creating a memorable logo. Panzer started selling her newly created bath bombs in 2016 and has been producing and selling them since.

Panzer produces her scented bath bombs from her Chartridge home, creating unique combinations that make bath water fizzle and turn into different colors, all while moisturizing the skin. AMP’s current product line includes vanilla- and lavender-scented bath bombs, as well as lip scrubs and lip exfoliators, all of which Panzer designed on her own. By carefully selecting the ingredients she uses, she ensures that her products are all-natural, organic and not harmful to the skin.

Panzer is now experimenting with other scent combinations and hopes to introduce lemon-scented and mint-scented bombs in the near future.

So far, Panzer has sold her products mainly to fellow classmates and their parents. Although marketing efforts for AMP Cosmetics, a name derived from Panzer’s initials, has mostly been through word of mouth, Panzer is working on expanding her company’s outreach to the Internet, social media and in-person marketing. She plans to put more thought into a company website and to enhance her business cards.

Despite being a senior at Severna Park High, Panzer’s attention to her business hasn’t detracted from her studies. “It’s fun, but I don’t let it get in the way of my schoolwork,” she assured. After Panzer graduates next year, she plans to split her time between her company and college studies. She aspires to major in psychology and minor in business administration.
