With Christmas approaching, most kids are pondering the gifts that will surround their trees come December 25, but one seventh-grader at Severna Park Middle School spent his November envisioning the gift he could give to others.

After hearing from his uncle that officers in Key West, Florida were in need of supplies following Hurricane Irma’s rampage, Tristan Newhouse brainstormed ways to help. His father is a police officer after all.

His idea was to collect $150 that he could use to purchase needed supplies. “Initially, I wanted to go door to door,” he said. With a smile, he added, “My mom wouldn’t let me do that.”

Instead, Tristan went to family and friends. He raised $140 on his own and received $20 from his mom to put him above his $150 goal. “They were people I knew. They were pretty generous,” Tristan said.

With the funds, Tristan purchased the following items: 80 packs of crackers, 72 Fiber One bars, 48 packages of Ramen Noodles, 30 cans of tuna fish, 40 bars of soap, 20 toothbrushes and 15 tubes of toothpaste. The package was shipped to the Key Colony Beach Police Department in Florida over Thanksgiving week.

To thank him for the kind gesture, a group of officers surprised Tristan with a citation on November 20 at Anne Arundel County Police Department headquarters in Millersville. The officers were Captain Thomas Kohlmann, Major Michelle Simpson, Captain Herb Hasenpusch and Captain Shawn Urbas.

Asked when she realized that her son was taking the effort seriously, Tracy Newhouse said, “The day he came home with an envelope full of money. He has a very big heart.”
