Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival has become somewhat of a legend in Severna Park. Every year, it seems to get bigger and bigger, with more stunning dance numbers, more elaborate sets, and a more comprehensive array of music. It has truly become a rock concert at Severna Park High School.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival returns for its 23rd year this March, and for the students involved, the time period from the beginning of January until the end of March can be the most exciting — but also the busiest — time of the year. The 100+ students involved spend hours learning their dances, mastering their vocals, building the set and recreating the well known music in preparation for the show.

This year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival is circus-themed, deemed “The Greatest Show on Earth.” The demanding theme requires a lot of preparation, a challenge that the cast, crew and band are willing to take on with the help of their directors.

Junior Maggie Kelley is one of three students that work alongside director Ms. Germanos, and the three music directors Mr. Halmi, Ms. Gabriele, and Mr. Friedman, assisting them in teaching the songs.Kelley describes, “The student directors use personal time to learn all of the songs and come up with backup moves to teach.”

While teaching all lyrics and harmonies to the 40 songs is a daunting task, choreographing the l2 dance numbers is not easy either. Seniors Elizabeth Chisolm and Janey Dike are assisting choreographers Kelly DeLeon and Katie Shewbridge with this undertaking as student choreographers. “Every Saturday, Elizabeth and I work with the choreographers and go over the dances we will be teaching during the week.We listen to the music and all offer ideas on what to include in the dances” said Dike.

Another group of students working hard in anticipation for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival is the 12-person student band, directed by Mr. Rohrbach. Senior Rob Luzier, the student band director, said, “I’m excited that the band will be featured a lot more this year. I’m especially excited about the opening number.”

Despite all of the work involved, the cast, as well as the student leaders, look forward to the final product, the opening of Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival XXIII.“I’m looking forward to performing and having people watch the dances I helped create,” said Dike.

Along with satisfaction, seeing all of their hard work pay off to create this show forms a sense of camaraderie among the cast members, according to Kelley.“Everybody comes together as a cast at the end and we all work together to put on an awesome show” she said.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival XXIII opens March 9 and will run every weekend until March 24. Tickets are available through mail order only. For more information visit www.sphsdrama.com.
