County Executive Steve Schuh and Police Chief Tim Altomare recently announced a joint Anne Arundel County/City of Annapolis taskforce to investigate, charge and convict members of violent street gangs.

“Recent events have demonstrated that we need to redouble our efforts and take back streets affected by gang violence,” said Schuh. “We ask residents to help us as we work to eradicate the gang problem in Anne Arundel County.”

The Anti-Gang Joint Taskforce will be composed of officials from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, City of Annapolis Police Department and officials from federal law enforcement agencies. Working together, the unit will investigate and build criminal cases against individuals believed to be involved with gang activity in the county.

“No resident of Anne Arundel County should live in fear,” said Altomare. “We stand here determined to address the gang threat swiftly and effectively.”

During the press conference, Altomare and Schuh asked residents to help in the county’s efforts. Residents who see signs of gang activity are encouraged to call the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s anonymous tip line at 410-222-4700.

Residents who feel they may be the target of gangs are encouraged to call 911. The police department will have bilingual personnel on standby to assist on calls for non-English speaking residents.

Maria Casasco, the county's immigrant and multicultural affairs officer, can also assist residents in the Hispanic community.

“The message is very clear and strong: Please contact our authorities as soon as you can,” said Casasco. “Do not get intimidated. You can do it anonymously or in person to someone you trust. We are here for you!”

Residents can contact Casasco at 410-222-1879 in English and Spanish.
