Obama Stokes Energy Crisis
By Scott Davis
Rising gas prices are driving up the cost of goods and services across the nation, and the United States has no coherent energy policy. Not only has President Obama opposed oil drilling off American shores, he has supported the wave of rebellions in the Middle East, which has prompted criticism from Arab leaders. Moreover, a recent move by the government-run U.S. Export-Import Bank has loaned Brazils state-owned oil company $2 billion for drilling off the coast of Rio De Janeiro.
Conclusion: when Brazils socialist leaders want to make money by drilling and selling oil around the world its OK, but when Americans want the same thing its not.
Theres something awfully telling about a Democrat energy non-strategy that has been responsible for the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of the world. The U.S. has enriched the Middle East because of its reluctance to use its own natural resources (oil, coal and gas) and technology (nuclear) to power its economy.
We have been told that our methods for extracting oil will poison the worlds environment. Yet, its U.S. Government regulation that has forced oil exploration into deep and hazardous waters, ans has increased the risk of spills and death for American workers. Meanwhile, far away nations with less efficient technology and lax environmental standards make a fortune selling us what we already have.
Yet, for example, Libyas oil wealth does not flow into the hands of its people. Moammar Gadhafi is a hybrid socialist, communist and Islamic autocratic leader, who apportions the wealth of his nation to himself. Now he has an uprising on his hands and his response is to roll in the tanks, kill the internet, and hunker down for a protracted war with the people he once purported to represent. Did I mention he has held Libyas highest office for 41 years? In that time Libya has become one of the most corrupt nations on earth.
Thats what happens when a single political entity has remained in power for far too long. Therefore, when the Democrat party tries to sell Americans an energy policy consisting of steam whistles and box cars we should view it with suspicion. They want us to take trains and ride bikes, as if we should yearn for the nostalgia of a time when Americans didnt have indoor plumbing. Clean coal, natural gas, and nuclear energy have little impact on the environment and provide much needed power for the American quality of life.
The Democrat longing for Amtrak and battery-powered cars does not translate to good environmental policy. Lithium batteries and half-filled train cars do nothing to lessen the strain on Americas power grid or reduce toxic waste.
Obamas Environmental Protection Agency has pushed Shell Alaska into dropping plans to drill in the Arctic waters of the Beaufort Sea this year. You can count on gas prices continuing to spike. By claiming the effect of emissions from Alaskan drilling ships and support vessels was not fully understood, and could be harmful to the environment, Shells permits were remanded. One more instance of Obamas government playing favorites.
And so, America sits at the back of the bus while other nations benefit from the use of our natural resources. What does this mean for the American economy? The loss of 800 direct jobs and even more indirect jobs, and, of course, higher oil prices.
When a nation experiences brown-outs and power outages, its not politicians that go without hot water, internet access, limousines, tanks, and jets. By voting for politicians who purport to starve America of its own natural resources, the citizenry is depriving future generations, and themselves, of the very building-blocks of freedom. Remember, political freedom and economic freedom go hand-in-hand.
Once politicians have convinced free individuals to surrender their economic independence, expect the lights to go out.
