At the 2017 Rotary International Convention in June, Rotary’s most recent fundraising efforts were made public and reported by major network news entities. According to our partner, the Gates Foundation, in a speech to Rotarians at the convention, Bill Gates and Rotary President John Germ announced that an estimated $1.5 billion could get polio to zero cases in the next three years. At the time of Gates’ speech, high-roller Rotary International Foundation donors, world governments and the Gates Foundation raised $1.2 billion in pledges for the next three years. Michael Bloomberg of New York mayoral fame added $25 million to that.

Two countries that still have a few polio cases are government contributors: Pakistan and Nigeria. I believe Afghanistan is just not organized enough to participate.

Through May, only five cases have been reported this year. A country must be clear a minimum of three years to be considered clear. Nigeria was clear for two years and cases popped up again and they had to start over. The World Health Organization sends the teams of inoculators over and the vaccine is the least expensive of the cost of performing the inoculations.

I know Rotary International has had this on their plate for over 30 years. We will make it.
