Steve Mainhart, owner of Woodfire, poses with Jennifer Peckman.

Jennifer Peckman of Severna Park loves her mom, Carole Sacks! Jennifer won a $50 gift card to the Woodfire Restaurant, courtesy of the Severna Park Voice, by writing the best description of why she loves her mother for our "Best Mom Contest" in honor of Mother's Day.

Jennifer wrote, "My mom is very deserving because she had to deal with the death of her first husband - and being left with three young children - at the age of 24. Then she took faith, remarried, and had me. And she raised four very diffuclt kids in teenage years. She was, and is, always full of love. She had to bury a son at the age of 41, which is not easy to lose a child at any age. She has been an awesomely supportive and loving mother and grandmother. She has held my hand at my worst, even at the death of my father. My mom is all I have left, and she is the best and sweetest person I know. All she has been through has not jaded her. Needless to say she has had more heartache than to mention but she doesnt deserve me telling her whole story - some things are to personal. She deserves this honor most of all because I LOVE HER!!!"

Description of the event by PUMC: Every day in the news we see the incredible amount of stress people deal with. Weather disasters, terrorism, acts of violence. Its impact on every person is apparent. Children and adults struggle with the anxiety and feelings of sadness generated by these issues. Pasadena United Methodist Church extends to our entire community the opportunity to learn coping skills that really work. Our mission is to care for the individuals and families living in our community.

With great pride we present an afternoon to help our entire community, and all are welcome. Bring a friend or neighbor of any age. Come learn about anxiety, depression/suicide, substance abuse, and how to deal effectively with these issues. Learn to be an individual/family that knows how to develop a resilient, “bounce-back” style of coping with stress. Learn to enhance your feelings of positive self-esteem and how to de-escalate anger when it arises between individuals. Learn about all these topics and more in a relaxed, warm environment. Ask the questions you have always wanted, to help you know more about stress and mental wellness! We are really grateful to have Arundel Psychological Associates as our community resource.

Steve Samaras, owner of Zachary’s Jewelers in Severna Park, will be interviewed by CNN Headline News regarding the second-annual Mother’s Day Design Contest at the Severna Park location. The CNN Headline News interview, a 5-minute segment which highlights local area organizations and their involvement in the community, will air throughout the month of May.

The interview will focus on the jewelry store’s contest for local area fifth graders. The young students have the chance to design a piece of jewelry for their mother in their art classes. Finalists will be selected from each of the participating schools and the top three will have their design made into a piece of jewelry for their mother. All participating artists will be invited to a Mother’s Day brunch at Zachary’s Jewelers on May 6, where the winning artist will be announced and presented with the finished jewelry.

Steve Samaras, owner of Zachary’s, said, “We take pride in becoming involved and interacting in a positive way with our local communities. This contest is a way to engage with the families in the area and to re-enforce the positive role that local area businesses can take part and build relationships outside of their stores.”

If you are a smoker, you should be concerned about the effects smoking has on your health. Oral cancers accounted for over 7,000 deaths in the United States last year (1 percent of all cancer deaths). People with a previous history of oral cancer and those over the age of 40 who combine tobacco and alcohol are at the highest risk. Oral cancer is universally found in people of all ages and backgrounds. The presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) by itself is a factor for oropharayngeal cancers.

In the winter of 1637, John Lilburn, a publisher of pamphlets, was arrested by the English authorities for publishing “unlicensed books.” This was a technicality. The real reason for his arrest was that Lilburn was a promoter of “freeborn rights,” the idea that every human being by the nature of their very existence is entitled to certain legal rights which are immutable.

On April 2, Severna Park resident Dan Bongino secured the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in the state of Maryland. "I am grateful to the voters of Maryland who have given me this amazing opportunity," said Bongino. "I would also like to thank the other Republican challengers. We all share the same concerns about the direction of this country and agree it is time Maryland had new representation in D.C. I hope they will join my campaign to bring an outsider's perspective to the U.S. Senate."
