Tuesday, May 2

10:00am-11:30am: Yoga for Stroke Patients – A 10-week class for stroke survivors (Executive Center, 300 Hospital Drive, Suite 128). The cost is $60 and is due at the time of registration. For more information and to register online, visit www.mybwmc.org/exercise or call 410-553-8103.

10:30am-11:30am: The Tate Cancer Center Survivorship Program offers therapeutic yoga for cancer patients. Both patients and caregivers are welcome and no prior yoga experience is necessary. Chair yoga and deep breathing will also be offered. The program is free. Bring water. Reservations are not requested but encouraged. For more information, call 410-302-7663 (Executive Center, 300 Hospital Drive, Suite 128). This class is offered each Wednesday at the same time and location.

4:30pm-5:30pm: Preventing Diabetes - A diabetes educator will lead a one-hour class discussing factors leading to diabetes, and lifestyle changes to prevent diabetes and improve overall health. The class is free, but reservations are requested. To register or for more information, call 410-787-4940 (Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at UM BWMC, 300 Hospital Drive, Suite 223). This class will also be offered on Thursday, May 10, from 2:00pm-3:00pm and Monday, May 21, from 10:00am-11:00am.

5:00pm-6:30pm: Cancer Survivorship Support Group – This free self-care skills class and group discussion offers information and support for cancer patients and survivors. In addition to networking and peer support, the group will discuss timely topics related to treatment and care (Tate Cancer Center, first floor conference room, 305 Hospital Drive). 6:00pm-8:00pm: The University of Maryland Center for Weight Management and Wellness offers a weight loss surgery support group (Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center, 301 Hospital Drive, third floor). Registration is required by calling 410-328-8940. 8:30am-noon: Free blood pressure screening at Harundale Presbyterian Church (Eastway and Guilford Road in Glen Burnie). Reservations are not requested.

Monday, May 21

5:30pm-8:00pm: UM BWMC offers a free CPR Anytime community class at 301 Hospital Drive in the Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center, 301 Hospital Drive, third floor. Learn basic CPR, AED skills and choking relief. Adult skills class is offered at 5:30pm, followed by infant skills at 7:00pm. Preregistration is requested by calling 410-553-8103.

 

Wednesday, May 23

9:00am-12:30pm: Join the University of Maryland Medical System and the University of Maryland, Baltimore for a free community conversation about depression and anxiety. This event is open to the public and provides an opportunity to hear from and talk to health care professionals and community leaders about depression, anxiety and the road to recovery. 6:00pm-7:00pm: Type 1 Diabetes Support Group designed for adults with Type 1 diabetes and their family members share ideas, stories and concerns about living with Type 1 diabetes (Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at UM BWMC, 300 Hospital Drive, Suite 223).

6:30pm-8:00pm: Mental Health Support Group for community members and families seeking information on psychiatric issues. Meetings are held in Room A of the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) located on the second floor of UM BWMC. Reservations are not requested. For more information, call 410-553-8070.

 

Wednesday, May 30

6:30pm-8:00pm: UM BWMC vascular surgeon Mariano Arosemena, MD, and Terry DeVeaux, RN, MS, ACNP, host a free seminar, “Get a Leg Up on Vascular Disease.” This lecture will discuss vascular disease and how issues such as peripheral artery disease (also known as PAD) can be diagnosed and corrected (Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center, 301 Hospital Drive, third floor). Thursday, May 31

6:00pm-7:00pm: Ostomy Support Group – for anyone with a urinary or fecal diversion (an ostomy), their family members or support people, patients with Crohn’s disease or colitis, or anyone looking for ostomy advice and support. The program covers topics that include ostomy options, hygiene and maintenance, psychosocial issues, recommendations and local resources. In addition to a presentation, participants are encouraged to share experiences and helpful tips in open discussion (Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center, 301 Hospital Drive, third floor).
