The McCandless Family Fundraiser at Rodz N Rydz Will Be Held On Saturday, March 24 RAIN OR SHINE!

In an effort to raise funds during a time of need, the Severna Park-based Rodz N Rydz, with special assistance from Shooting Star Productions, will sponsor and support a fundraising event at their restaurant on Saturday, March 24, from 1:00-5:00pm.

This fund will support the McCandless family with much needed day-to-day living expenses, and will be administered by the Green Hornets athletic organization.

The menu will include a pig roast with potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans and draft beer. There will also be live music, along with a silent auction and 50-50 raffle.

Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at the door. All proceeds will go directly to the McCandless Family Fund.

“We are fully supporting this event and Rodz n Rydz is happy to do its part to help support the McCandless family with this special fund,” said Troy Bryant, owner of Rodz and Rydz.

For the volunteers of Giving Back, it's an annual Christmas Eve tradition to make their rounds, attend the 11:00pm service at Woods Church and then visit 7-11 for some late night Slurpees.

The road paving project on Old Country Road is one of the many being completed throughout Greater Severna Park.

By Darrell Mak
With winter upon us, county crews are now scurrying to complete as much road work as possible in and around the area before snow and freezing temperatures play havoc against them.
A major road rehabilitation project is finally nearing completion along about a one-mile stretch on both the eastbound and westbound directions of College Parkway in Arnold, from Ritchie Highway to College Manor Drive. Final repaving work is being completed Sunday through Thursday evenings from 8:00pm to 6:00am, to minimize rush-hour traffic delays.

Home for the holidays, Dru DeCaro (left) and Brad Wray played for a small but enthusiastic gathering of friends and family during at the Wray’s Christmas celebration at Brian Boru.

One crisp night in late December, quietly, and without much fanfare, two very talented young men, who grew up as friends in Shipley’s Choice, took to the stage at Brian Boru and entertained the crowd with a Holiday Hullaboru.
This wasn’t just some local band, mind you. Dru DeCaro and Brad Wray have been friends and neighbors most of their lives. These days they’re both on the road playing with the likes of Edwin McCain and Miquel - opening for Usher and appearing on Jimmy Kimmel and Letterman. Talent, hard work and perseverance have paid off.

Oh the weather outside was… Delightful! Though it was a bit chilly, the night of the Severna Park Holiday Tree lighting was otherwise pleasant with no wind and no rain to mar the annual tradition.
The evening kicked off promptly at 5:00pm with Michael Binnie on the bagpipes. The entertainment continued with performances from the Severna Park Elementary School Chorus and Maryland Performing Arts Center dancers. Over in the Chamber meeting room, folks lined up for refreshments courtesy of Brownie Troupe 292. The girls were joined by Troops 1724, 2092, 1903, 537 and 1295.
“This is our meeting space,” explained co-leader Kristi Parsons, “and our first time helping out. I think it’s going well.”

After almost 11 years of service on the Anne Arundel County Council, Cathy Vitale is headed for a new challenge. On December 6, Dick Ladd will replace her as Chairman of the Council and as District 5 representative. On January 12, 2011, Vitale will be sworn in as the newest delegate for District 33A in the Maryland General Assembly.
“For 38 days I will be a private citizen. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with all my free time,” kidded Vitale, Severna Park’s delegate-elect. “I plan to call my councilman a lot. I have a few potholes to discuss with Mr. Ladd.”

The Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce Holiday Trade Fair is not your average venue. At an average event, attendees can expect to find bored looking people in business suits counting the minutes until they can leave. At the GSPCC event, it’s a different story.

The 2010 Severna Park boys soccer team went 14-3-2, with 44 goals scored and a mere 14 allowed, including nine shutouts. The Falcons are shown here celebrating their Region Final win over rival Broadneck.

By Amy Russell
The Severna Park boys soccer team captured the 2010 region championship against Broadneck, winning a scoreless game in double overtime, 5-3, on penalty kicks.
The Bruins looked determined to vindicate themselves from a 2-1 loss the Falcons handed them early in the season, but in the end, by a remarkably narrow margin, Severna Park prevailed to secure a trip to the state semi-finals where they would fall to Magruder.
Severna Park, seeded fourth in the 4A East bracket, fought to earn the region title with a first round, 3-1, win over Chesapeake that was led by junior Alexander Moore, who tallied two goals, and senior Jared Fenton with one. Just days later, the Falcons outplayed Leonardtown, 3-1, in the region quarterfinals as senior Erik Schuh produced two goals and Moore chipped in one, with assists from senior defender Elliot Belchatovski, Schuh and Fenton.
