No Need To Go Far - Local Area To Host Array Of Fourth Of July Festivities
By Ashlea Browning
Whether youre seeking fireworks or a parade, theres no need to battle the crowds in Baltimore or D.C. this year. From Gibson Island to Severna Park to Annapolis, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate Independence Day locally.
The Severna Park Independence Day Parade, sponsored by the Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce, will take place on Wednesday, July 4. This years theme is Celebrate Freedom, and the GSPCC will honor three wounded warriors as Grand Marshals - Ryan Kules, Adam Mattis and David Weiner. The parade takes off from St. Martin's in-the-Field Church at 10:00am and marches down Benfield and Evergreen Roads, finishing with a fun-filled festival for the entire family at Cypress Creek Park until 1:30pm. The event will feature numerous food vendors, live entertainment, a Fun Bus for kids, a rock-climbing wall from Big Vanilla, pony ring, dunking booth, moon bounce and more.
The Patriotic Program at Hancocks Resolution, where costumed interpreters will provide insight into our countrys beginnings, takes place on July 1 this year. From 1:00-4:00pm, attendees can trace our countrys expansion westward from the original 13 colonies and learn about the flag and other patriotic symbols. There will also be an exhibit on colonial fashions during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Hancocks Resolution is located at 2795 Bayside Beach Road in Pasadena and admission is free.
The Annapolis Independence Day Parade and Fireworks will begin with the parade at 6:30pm. It steps off on Amos Garrett Boulevard and concludes in front of the Market House. The United States Naval Academy Band will play from at 8:00pm until dark at Susan Campbell Park, and will feature everything from light classics to marches to classic band literature to patriotic songs. At around 9:15pm, the fireworks will begin in the Annapolis Harbor. The best viewing areas include public spaces northeast of the Severn River, along the Naval Academy Bridge, any of the street end parks facing Spa Creek, and anywhere aboard a boat in the Annapolis harbor. The Spa Creek Bridge will be closed to traffic beginning at 9:00pm to create a spectator pier with an unobstructed view of the fireworks.
Fourth of July Fireworks Cruises in Annapolis and Baltimore offer a different way to enjoy the firework displays. Watermark Cruises hosts Independence Day activities for families, couples and even pets. They recommend making reservations early because the fireworks cruises usually sell out. On Wednesday, July 4 from 7:30-10:30pm, step aboard the Harbor Queen for a lovely evening cruise of the Annapolis Harbor and the Scenic Severn River. Sit back, relax and enjoy a beautiful summer sunset followed by the full City Dock fireworks display from the spacious top deck. Finally, in Baltimores Inner Harbor, step aboard the Annapolitan II for an enjoyable evening cruise capped off by the city's fireworks show. All cruises will include light snacks and a cash bar.
Fort Meade's Independence Day Celebration takes place on July 4, rain or shine. The event starts at noon on Fort Meades Parade Field and runs until the conclusion of the fireworks, which begin at 9:30pm. There will be food vendors and several childrens rides, offering opportunities for everyone to enjoy the day. Tickets are not required and attendance is open at all. DJ Teddy will provide entertainment from noon-4:00pm and the Phoenix Band will perform from 6:00-9:00pm.
Bowie's annual Fourth of July Celebration will occur on July 4 at Allen Pond Park. Food and drinks will be on sale throughout the park beginning at 3:00pm. Excellent viewing locations and concessions are available on both the Northview Drive and the Mitchellville Road sides of the park. At 9:00pm, the mayor will host a short flag ceremony and the singing of the National Anthem. Fireworks begin at 9:15pm.
And if you cant make it out to any of these great festivities to celebrate our nations independence, at the very least, light up a sparkler, bang on some pots and pans, throw some burgers on the grill, and have a safe and happy Fourth of July.
