Life Is What Happens While You’re Busy Making Other Plans

The quote in this title was borrowed from the late John Lennon, but it holds true throughout time. No matter how perfectly we plan, the unexpected always seems to happen.

“Bill Johnson” came to SPAN and told us he felt jinxed. In one week, he was in a car accident, his daughter broke her leg and his boss asked him to take a two-month leave without pay due to slow business. Forced to choose between paying his rent or his electricity, Bill allowed his electric bill to go into arrears and received a cut-off notice from BGE. Bill hated to ask for assistance, but when we paid his electric bill, he repeatedly thanked us, acknowledging he was happy SPAN exists.

We can’t do it alone. SPAN is able to help our neighbors in need because of the generosity of our volunteers, member churches and donors. Please consider giving local next time you are looking for a charity.

Our only fundraiser, the Stride for Span Turkey Trot 5K Run/1M Fun Walk, will take place at Kinder Park on Sunday, November 12. This highly anticipated family- and pet-friendly event is open now for registration at www.active.com. Sponsorships are also available, and we want to thank our first three official sponsors: Savvy Consignment, Wright Orthodontics and Bay Area Appraisers. To learn more about being a sponsor, email spanhelps@yahoo.com.

It’s time to think about Holiday Caring. Starting in September, we invite our clients to sign up for our Holiday Caring program, which provides holiday food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas and gifts for children at Christmas. Sponsors will be matched with a deserving family and will then purchase food and/or gifts for them and deliver the donations to SPAN for distribution. Signing up is as simple as emailing spanhelps@yahoo.com and saying you’d like to sponsor a family. We’ll have forms on our website in the coming weeks. No time to shop? You can designate a financial donation to be used for Holiday Caring.

We want to thank Mother’s Peninsula Grille in Arnold for sponsoring a give-back day on August 28 for SPAN. We are also grateful to Karen Huntley of Tastefully Simple, who recently committed to making monthly donations of her delicious products to SPAN. We love partnering with local businesses. Shop local – Give local!

Help us spread the word about SPAN. We have new brochures, donation boxes, SPAN shopping bags, and pens. Just let us know if you want any of these and we’ll make sure you get them! To receive our newsletters, sign up at spanhelps@yahoo.com.
