We often hear people talk about being in the holiday spirit. I’m sure it might mean something slightly different to different people, but for the most part, we all agree on the general idea — that we’re cheerful and outgoing even toward those we don’t know, that we feel grateful for what we have, that we feel an urge to be generous toward those who are less fortunate, and that good is prevalent in the world.

Then there’s always the eternal optimist who reminds us we should be carrying the holiday spirit in our hearts all year-round, and even though we all agree with that in theory, it’s much easier said than done.

I point this out, however, because I recognize the holiday spirit is pretty similar to our mission here at the Voice. When I write this column every month, I always touch on many of the same points. We want to bring everyone in the community together, even if there are those in the community who might feel reserved or excluded. We want to let you know about those in need, so you can help out by giving your time, money or moral support. We want to highlight the positive and find a way to overcome the negative.

In a way, we at the Voice are trying to keep the holiday spirit throughout the entire year, and we know that our community does the same thing — your positive feedback lets us know that you’re onboard with our mission.

The December issue you’re currently reading might have a bit more red and green in some of the pictures, and you’ll probably spot no fewer than five photos of Santa Claus in his appearances around town, but despite the prominent holiday coverage, this issue is no more or less special than any other. Whether it’s December or June, the Severna Park community never fails to be caring, charitable, hopeful and constructive. That’s pretty special.

Although this will be the last print version of the paper until January, don’t think that our team here at the Voice will be going into hibernation mode quite yet. You will still see us out and about at all the community events coming up in the weeks ahead, and be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for our latest coverage.

I hope all of you have a safe, healthy and happy holiday season. As always, feel free to drop me a note at with any story ideas and feedback. Thanks for always reading!
