“Shop Local,” “Shop Small,” “Dine Small.” What’s the value behind those phrases? It’s all about supporting our local independent businesses because they support our community. When you need a donation for a Parent Teacher Student Organization fundraiser, a charity auction or a sponsorship for a sports team, whom do you ask? Our local businesses are the backbone of our community. They make the donations, provide the sponsorships and send the volunteers, in many cases. Thank them and support them so that they can continue to make our community the strong and vibrant place it is. With this in mind, plan to attend the Shop Local Fun Festival on Saturday, May 20, (rain date May 21) from noon to 4:00pm in Park Plaza. It’s a free event! You’ll find us in the area between Bill Bateman’s Bistro and Noodles with vendors and exhibitors, a petting zoo, face painters, entertainment and a dunk tank (to name a few)! If you have questions, call 410-647-3900 or email us at info@severnaparkchamber.com.

The Greater Severna Park and Arnold Chamber of Commerce has Fourth of July Parade applications ready to go! We’re always looking for involvement by our communities, businesses, nonprofits, sports teams and others! This year is the chamber’s 60th anniversary, and in honor of that, we’re remembering 1957 – the year we were founded by Walter Winkelmeyer – with the theme “the Fabulous ‘50s.” Our grand marshal will be Mr. Winkelmeyer’s daughter, Betty Winkelmeyer Wells. The parade will be on Tuesday, July 4, beginning at 10:00am.

Our May general membership luncheon will be held at Crowne Plaza Annapolis on May 24. Our SBA honorees will be recognized, and we will announce our Business Person of the Year at the luncheon! The guest speaker will be Julie A. Mussog, president and CEO of Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation.

Our Business Development Initiative will feature a May 17 program entitled “What are the Inhibitors Facing Your Business?” Learn about the inhibitors facing your business and develop a strategy to overcome them. This program will be held at 8:00am at Ledo Pizza (552-E Ritchie Highway in Severna Park). Patrick Lee from Spark Business Institute and Chesapeake Think Tank is the facilitator. There is no fee to attend and coffee will be served. RSVP to info@servernaparkchamber.com.

On Wednesday, May 10, our Successful Women in Business group will hold a speed-dating event at Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi. Doors open at 11:30am. Attendees are requested to not arrive later than 11:55am so as not to miss a second of the program’s format. This is tried-and-true marketing for your business. For members of the chamber and first-time guests, it’s free. Nonmembers pay $15.

The Greater Severna Park and Arnold Chamber of Commerce has a cookout series for its members from May through August, with one free Friday cookout per month. The first one is Friday, May 12, and our sponsor is SERVPRO of Annapolis and Severna Park. Our Free Super SERVPRO Summer Cookouts are held from noon to 1:00pm on the lawn at the chamber. It’s another benefit of membership that we enjoy providing. For more information on the Greater Severna Park and Arnold Chamber of Commerce, visit www.severnaparkchamber.com or call 410-647-3900.
