For 40 Years, Moran Insurance Has Made Community Involvement A Part Of Business

When George Moran began his insurance agency — what would eventually be known throughout Greater Severna Park as Moran Insurance — the year was 1977 and he operated in a small room above his garage at home in Ulmstead of Arnold. It was a humble beginning, but he never aimed to be the biggest; he simply wanted to be the best, and that meant being engaged with the community around him.

“His vision then was to be part of the community and be a good insurance agent and have fun along the way,” recalled Donna Moran, the late founder’s wife, who has been with the agency since 1984 and serves as a vice president and account executive.

That vision holds today thanks to the leadership of Moran and managing partners Marc Dorman, president, and Matt Lehmann, vice president, who bought Moran Insurance in 2010 and who look to carry on the legacy that was passed to them.

“George was a mentor to Matt and me in the beginning when we were buying the agency,” Dorman explained. “We knew the Moran name, what George and Donna did, and we knew it was going to be something we wanted to build from,” he added.

Although Moran Insurance has the resources of a larger agency, its smaller focus allows its team to be more involved in the community and establish a relationship with each client. “Bigger doesn’t mean better,” Moran said. “We just want to be the best. We want to treat our customers with care and be a referral-based business.”

Many of those referrals come from Moran Insurance’s community involvement, most notably its volunteer work and charitable giving with such groups as the Providence Center, Anne Arundel Medical Center, Hospice of the Chesapeake, Opportunity Builders Inc. and the Severna Park Community Center. Altogether, Moran Insurance serves more than 3,500 individuals and businesses throughout Anne Arundel County, D.C., Baltimore and the Eastern Shore.

“Usually people come to us because they see us in the community and they say, ‘I have a problem with my insurance. I’m going to call them,’” Moran said.

“They know what we do and trust us as individuals,” Dorman added.

Another important aspect of business for Moran Insurance is working closely with other insurance agencies in the interest of their clients. “We try to be partners with them because there are times they might need us or we might need them to get what’s best for the client,” Lehmann explained.

Although no plans have been set for an official 40th-anniversary celebration, Dorman expects that there will be something planned for the summer. Even though the business is 40 years old, Dorman doesn’t foresee Moran Insurance losing any of its well-established presence in the community — he sees it only getting stronger, and he hopes to help the next generation of Severna Park find the right insurance. People who want to learn more can visit or call 410-544-3422.

“This is our 40th anniversary, but we’re here to stay and we want to continue to serve the community of Severna Park and the surrounding areas as an independent agency and as a young agency,” he said. “We plan to be around and grow and continue to give back.”
