Woodfire Spotlights An Array Of Local Acoustic Talent
By Hayley Gable
Walk into Woodfires BackRoom on any given Friday or Saturday night and youre likely to hear the mellow sounds of a local musician strumming away at the guitar. While its common for many restaurants to provide live artists and bands as an entrancing source of entertainment and background music, the Severna Park restaurant has long served as an outlet for blossoming musicians.
At Woodfires BackRoom, the month of April is fully booked with crowd-favorites such as Pilgrim and Trout, Dana B., Angie Miller, Kajun Kelly and Eric Scott.
After 30 years of performing locally at almost every dock bar, café and roadhouse in the region, Annapolis-based group Pilgrim and Trout continues to jam out at various Severna Park venues, putting on a show that not only includes a jazzy-folk-style music mix, but a playful banter between band members and the audience. The band will perform on Friday, April 8 at 8:00pm.
On Saturday, April 9 at 8:00pm, Dana B, a professional musician specializing in a rock and soul-style of acoustic guitar will also perform. His musical work has been featured on hit television shows such as ABCs Cougar Town and MTVs Real World. In addition, he's been a sideman, front man, trombonist, studio bassist, keyboardist, studio vocalist and audio consultant throughout his career as a professional musician.
Inspired by the works of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, acoustic rock artist Angie Miller will entertain the crowd with her original melodies on Friday, April 15 at 8:00pm. The singer and guitarist, who is currently working on a new album that is due out later this year, hooks her listeners with a blend of pop and modern folk flare. Each of Millers ballads, if listened carefully, tell an introspective story that all audience members can find themselves relating to.
On Saturday, April 16, accomplished guitarist Kajun Kelly will put on a show. His musical resume includes having partnered with Monte Montgomery, Jimmy Buffett, Chris Duarte and Linwood Taylor. Also noteworthy, Kelly has previously performed at nationwide venues such as The House of Blues in New Orleans, Jimmy Buffetts Margaritaville in Key West, the Chicago Blues Festival and the Virginia Wine Festival.
Washington, D.C.-based musician Eric Scott, who describes his unique style as a blur of neo-soul, pop, funk, rock, and even gospel, will perform on Saturday, April 23. The touring bassist and vocalist grew up listening to everything from Black Sabbath, Rush, AC/DC, and Motorhead to Marvin Gaye, Nat King Cole, The Temptations, ELO, Elton John, Hall and Oates, Joe Jackson, to Les McCann, Wes Montgomery and Dave Brubeck.
All performances at Woodfires BackRoom are free and open to the public. For a complete monthly schedule of local acoustic performers, visit www.woodfirebackroom.com.
