Great Music And Fun Festivals To Enjoy This Summer
By Ashlea Browning
Some of the most enjoyable aspects of summer are the long, sunny days and the warm, cozy nights. What better way to spend them than a relaxing evening at an outdoor concert? The local area offers several opportunities to pack a snack and some bug spray, stretch out on a lawn chair or blanket, and listen to the sweet sounds of summer in the open air.
The Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails are once again sponsoring a free summer concert series to be held at Hatton Regester Green on the B&A Trail at the intersection of B&A Boulevard and Evergreen Road. The planning committee is in the process of selecting bands and dates for the concert series, but plan to hold the concerts once again on Sunday evenings throughout July. Visit www.friendsofaatrails.org to stay posted for details as they develop.
The Bayside Concert Series presents free outdoor concerts at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis and at Downs Park in Pasadena during the course of the summer. The Quiet Waters performances are on Saturday evenings from 6:00-8:00pm and will run July 9 through September 4. They will feature a different genre of music every week including the Back Pages Band, the Kelly Bell Band, Sweet Leda, the U.S. Naval Sea Chanters, Hot Noodles, Beleza Brasil, the Jarflys, the U.S. Naval Band Cruisers and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Sunday evening performances will be held at Downs Park throughout June and July, with performances beginning at 6:00pm. There will be nine total shows at Downs Park, featuring a variety of music styles. Selected performers will be announced in May according to park officials.
Glen Burnie also offers a free summer concert series held every Friday night. The shows will be held at the Corcoran Pavilion in Glen Burnie from June 17 through July 22. This years lineup includes the Pocket Change Band, Vintage, the Sunset Band, the Esquires, the Bayside Big Band and Pet Rock. All performances begin at 7:30pm.
The Annapolis Maritime Museum hosts a popular Summertime Maritime Concert series every year. Performances are held every Thursday at Susan Campbell Park from noon until 1:00pm. The other lineup is Thursday Evenings in the Park, held at Capn Herbie Sadler Watermans Park on the museum grounds in Eastport. Shows will be at 7:00pm from June 18 to July 27; admission is free to attend the concerts, but donations are encouraged.
The Eastport-A-Rockin music festival will take place on June 23 right up the street from the museum. Over 25 bands will play throughout the day; they will range in style from rock, folk, roots, blues, jazz, bluegrass and funk. The days activities will also include a moon bounce, face painters, tattoo artists, an obstacle course, cotton candy and other family friendly activities. The streets and sidewalks will be lined with vendor booths featuring local artisans, crafters, non-profit organizations, entertainment and more. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and children 12 and under are admitted free of charge.
Another great event to take advantage of this summer is the First Sundays Arts Festivals in Annapolis. For five hours from noon until 5:00pm - a portion of Calvert and West Streets is closed to vehicles and is transformed into a fun festival of live music, dance, art, street performers, food and crafts. The free festivals are held every first Sunday of the month from May through October.
This summers calendar also features other festivals including the Piney Orchard Street Festival on May 12, which will feature a variety of games, food, live music, childrens entertainment, face painting and more. The Naptown barBAYq & Music Festival will be held May 4-5 at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds, and will offer BBQ competitions, a corn-hole tournament, moon bounces, obstacle courses, spin art, face painting, art vendors, and live music. The Annapolis Irish Festival, scheduled for July 14 at the fairgrounds, will feature 17 traditional and Irish rock bands, free dance lessons, animal ambassadors from Busch Gardens, pony rides, balloon art, face painting and a bouncy castle.
