Annual Fundraiser At SPCC Auctions Unique Artwork
By Dylan Roche
Is that a chair or a painting? Its both!
Artistically decorated chairs have been appearing all around the community in anticipation of the Severna Park Community Centers third-annual Chairs Around the Park benefit event. The fundraiser, set for June 24, will take place at the Robert E. McCleary Student Center on the Severn School campus from 6:00-8:00pm.
Guests will enjoy wine and desserts, have the chance to meet the artists individual residents, school classes and local business teams - and bid on chairs. Leading up to the event, an online auction will be available on the SPCC website. Online bids will continue into the event, where bidding will continue in the form of a silent auction. A live auction will also take place on select chairs.
Lending their talents to the event are artists from all over the community. The basic chair, an IKEA model called Stefan in black, is remodeled, painted and decorated to create works of art, many of which have a theme to them.
The event began at the suggestion of Karen Barry, a member of the SPCC development committee. The painted chairs were small and easily portable, and the artwork would reflect businesses and residents in the community. The chairs could be easily circulated around the community for everyone to see and then sold at auction to benefit the SPCC. The combined artistry and functionality of the chairs would make them a hot auction item. The event has proved popular over the years because of the way the different designs reflect the artists and businesses.
This year, 24 chairs and three stools have been distributed throughout the community. As they are returned, the chairs are displayed in the SPCC lobby and the Woods Church art gallery before being moved to the Robert Pascal Center in Park Plaza.
