Since 1976, The United States has observed Black History Month to educate people about African-American history and culture. The observance was originally established in 1926 as Negro History Week by Carter G. Woodson, a historian who focused on African-Americans’ reputable achievements and backgrounds.

Since its original production in 1952, Rogers and Hammerstein’s musical, “The King and I,” has been embraced by generation after generation. Now, local audiences have the chance to catch a professional production of the musical in all its glory at Toby’s Dinner Theatre of Columbia. “The King and I” is directed by Shawn Kettering, music directed by Ross Scott Rawlings, and choreographed by Tina DeSimone.

Locally raised musician Benny Marchant released his first full-length album “Cold Weather” last summer and will be touring the East Coast, including a stop at in Baltimore, beginning this month. From his Italian honeymoon getaway, Marchant gave a phone interview with The Voice, discussing “Cold Weather,” his passion for music, on working with the great Joe Chiccarelli, and what he misses most about Severna Park.

Once upon a time, a local Annapolis theatre company staged a retelling of Cinderella, changing the way adult audiences view fairy tales forever. Colonial Players continues its tradition of excellence with its latest production, “Cinderella Waltz” by Dan Nigro, which opened Jan. 6.

In the last year, Children’s Theatre of Annapolis has successfully transformed casts of youngsters into monstrous witches (in “The Witches”), historical figures (in “Night at the Wax Museum”) and lords and ladies (in 2010’s “Once Upon A Mattress”). Now, CTA brings us a cast of teenagers playing…teenagers.
